Awakening Your Inner Wisdom With IFS and Family Constellations

In Japan, there is an art form called Kintsugi. When a piece of pottery breaks, it doesn’t remain hidden or thrown away. It’s mended with lacquer mixed with gold, so the cracks become visible, even luminous. The bowl isn’t restored to what it was.
It becomes something more. A piece with a history, and a beauty that comes from having been broken and held.
I think of this often in my work, because most of us spend years trying to hide our cracks.
For example, a client of mine believes there is something “wrong” with her when she flips into a spiral of anxiety. We unpacked the source of her unhappiness as we slowly flipped the conversation to what is “right” with her. The moment she understood it from a different perspective, her entire attitude changed to one of positivity.
Stories like this is why I bring two approaches together: Internal Family Systems (IFS) and family constellations.
THE CRACKS AREN’T THE PROBLEM
IFS begins with a simple idea: we’re not one single self, but a family of inner parts. There’s a part that pushes us to do more, the part that hides, the part that criticises, the part that keeps the peace. This doesn’t mean we are flawed. Each is formed to protect us, often very early in life.
Underneath them sits what IFS calls Self: calm, curious, compassionate. Self is the gold. It doesn’t erase our parts. It meets them, and when they feel heard, they soften.
SOME CRACKS WERE HANDED TO US
Family constellations widen the lens. We carry more than our own experiences. We also carry the patterns, loyalties, and unspoken stories of the family we came from. Sometimes a struggle that feels deeply personal belongs to something older: a grief nobody spoke about, a role handed down, a place in the family that was never acknowledged.
Seeing this can bring real relief. It shows us what is ours to carry, and what we can lovingly hand back.
MENDING WITH GOLD
IFS helps us meet our parts, and constellation work helps us understand where those parts learned their roles. We understand and honour our history and our parts, accepting our innate wisdom and a willingness to integrate all our parts.
Awakening our inner wisdom looks like:
- Pausing before we react, and hearing what a part of us needs.
- Feeling more at ease in our bodies.
- Setting a healthy boundary without a storm of guilt.
- Trusting our quiet “Yes” and “No.
