Can you remember the last time you took the time to nurture yourself? True self-care is making the time to pay attention to the five keys of self-care:
Physical
Your body is the vessel that carries you through your life. It makes sense to take great care with how you feel and use your body. You can eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, get enough sleep and attend preventative healthcare, to increase your sense of wellbeing.
Emotional
We all have a right to honour our feelings without pushing them away. When you experience any strong emotions learn to engage in positive self-talk and have compassion for how you feel. You can learn to regulate your emotional responses by learning how to drop your ego mind and tap into an inner calm.
People
I know a few older folk who feel isolated with no one to talk to. They have spent their entire lives focussing on taking care of their families, and along the way, they never took the time to make friends. We all need people around us to some extent. When you are open to meeting new people, you will find and make friends. We, are by nature, social beings and so are you.
Spiritual
Spiritual self-care is about connecting with something greater than yourself, whether through your faith, nature or personal growth. Cultivating this path in your life could include meditation, spending time in nature or engaging in acts of service. Learning to cultivate gratitude and inner peace is the secret to a life filled with harmony and meaning.
Lifestyle
Instead of vegetating in front of your television, you create a life filled with meaningful moments. You surround yourself with like-minded people. You find your work fulfilling and are ready and open to taking on new projects. Your family is important to you and you make the time to engage with them. You have a strong support network you can rely on in any situation and you are a true friend to others.
Self-care is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. When you tend to all five dimensions of self-care, you create a strong foundation for a fulfilling and well-balanced life.
Take a moment to reflect on which areas of your life you need to make a priority. Start small, and watch as your well-being flourishes in every dimension.
